What is a preconception consultation?
A preconception visit is a conversation with a qualified clinician about health, medicines, previous pregnancies, family history and plans for pregnancy. The right checks depend on your circumstances; you do not need to order tests or stop medicines on your own.
Review conditions and medicines
Conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure concerns or thyroid disease may need review before pregnancy. Make a current list of prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal products. Ask the clinician whether any changes, vaccinations or supplements are appropriate for you.
Make a plan that fits your life
Discuss nutrition, movement, sleep, tobacco or alcohol use, emotional wellbeing and any barriers to care. The goal is practical, shared decisions—not pressure to achieve a perfect routine or a promise of a particular pregnancy outcome.
Do not postpone fertility evaluation
Preconception guidance is not a substitute for infertility assessment. Seek timely advice based on age, duration of trying and medical history, and include your partner in the conversation where relevant.
Need individual advice?
A general article cannot assess your personal health. Speak with a qualified clinician and seek timely evaluation where appropriate.
